Famous Encounters

Appusamy has had a few famous encounters during his lifetime.

When he was in higher elementary school, Mahatma Gandhi was touring and giving speeches and lectures all over India.  In a town called Pollachi (near Mr. Appusamy’s hometown), Gandhi was coming there on a certain day there which was planned in advance.  Mr. Appusamy collected money from 6 or 7 villages.  In total he collected about 50 rupees (Indian currency) which is now in American dollars $1.50. He put all the money in a tin and when Gandhi came on January 28, 1934, Mr. Appusamy personally handed the money to him.

Another famous encounter was in England, where he had gone to study. There he met King George VI of England, his wife, and his daughter, Elizabeth, the present Queen of England.  They came to the hostel where the other engineers and Mr. Appusamy were staying.

A few other encounters would be when he was Chief of Quality Control and engineering manager of Air India, Mr. Tata used to keep Mr. Appusamy in charge of travel with the V.I.P ‘s to see that everything on their trip was properly looked after. In those days he flew with the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru many times, and later with his daughter Indira Gandhi, who become the first woman Prime Minister of India.
